There's just something about seeing or hearing one's own name that makes a person feel special. And of all people, of course we want our kids to feel special, especially as they retire into their personal sanctuary. Whether you want to special order something or get your DIY on, there are plenty of ways you can incorporate your child's name into his or her room décor.
Natural Design Ideas
If your child's room incorporates nature, then why not use some found objects from around your yard or a local park? Finding sticks that look like letters can be fun, and tying or gluing multiple sticks together to form letters doesn't require technical expertise. The letters of your child's name can then be hung from a longer branch using string or twine or attached to another surface and then framed. Use your imagination, and feel free to mix items to create the look that's right for your child's room.
In addition to twigs, other natural elements that can be used include the following:
• Stones
• Pine cones
• Sea shells
Pops of Color
You can choose a solid color from your child's bedding or use an extra pillow case for an even more coordinated look. Simply wrap the fabric around a piece of cardboard that fits a picture frame, or use another solid surface, such as a wood plank or a metal cookie sheet. Tracing a simple, sans serif design onto the surface first may help. Then choose a contrasting color (or colors), and assemble objects that can be used to spell the name. To achieve a coherent look, use either the same type of item for each letter or different items of the same color; for instance, you could use solid colored pencils in a different color for each letter — or blue crayons for one letter, blue buttons for another, etc.
Here are a few more colorful items you could use:
• Pom Poms
• Beads (wood, plastic, or glass)
• Painted nuts and bolts
Cursive & Connected Options
You don't have to be a glue master or collect all kinds of items in order to incorporate your child's name into his or her bedroom décor. Whatever font you prefer, if you can find it and print it out, you can use it! Simply download and install the font of your choice (www.dafont.com is a great place to start looking) and then type out your child's name in that font, using your favorite word processing program. Be sure to enlarge the font to the size you wish to use for your finished product. Once you print out your design, you can trace its outline onto fabric, wood, or even directly to the wall, using carbon paper and a stylus (or any blunt-edged tool). Matte-finish surfaces work best for transferring designs, and white carbon paper is ideal for use on darker surfaces.
Once you trace the name, you can use the lines as your guide for many types of art, including these three popular options:
• Paint or marker
• Metallic thumb tacks
• Nails for string art
