The word "trundle" has British roots, originating from the word "trindle" which refers to a wheel, particularly the wheel of a wheelbarrow. True to its origins, a traditional trundle bed has trundles (or casters) attached to its feet, allowing it to be pushed under a master bed when not in use. Intended for servants who would sleep in their master's room, this sixteenth-century style is making a comeback in modern times, at least when it comes to children's beds.
Is a Trundle Bed right for your child's room? Read on to find out.
What's Hiding Under Your Child's Bed?
Under-bed space is often wasted space. Especially if floor and storage space is at a premium in your child's room, the last thing you want to do is waste that space! While we all know there aren't monsters, there may at least be dust bunnies, and anything currently stored beneath a bed can be difficult to reach. Instead of a space to be afraid of, your child's under-bed space can be transformed into purposeful, organized storage or extra sleep space as your needs may be. You can even choose a Trundle Bed style that can change as your family's needs change.
Do You Ever Need To Accommodate an Extra Sleeper?
Of course, you can provide an added sleeping surface in many ways: a sleeping bag, an air mattress, a roll-away cot, or a second bed. Neither a sleeping bag nor an air mattress offers quite the same comfort as a regular mattress, and for children spending the night in an unfamiliar place, the more comfortable the bed is, the more likely they are to get a good night's sleep. A roll-away cot takes up less space than a second bed, but both take up more room than a Trundle Bed.
Because a Trundle drawer can often be added to even a Bunk Bed — and without the added safety issues connected with heights — it's the ideal way to add a sleeping surface to your child's room. Our Mountain Mission Bed can include two 20-inch rolling drawers or a single Rolling Slatted Trundle that can accommodate a Twin mattress.
Do You Need Storage Space for Larger Items?
The word "truckle" is related to "trundle," and it remains part of the English language in the form of the metaphor "to truckle under," which means to be subservient. That reminder of the Trundle Bed's historic purpose can also transfer to a modern understanding of space and stuff: It should be a servant, not a master. Professional organizers all seem to agree that the best way to keep things from overtaking your life and space is to assign each item a place to belong. We all have items that simply don't fit into a dresser drawer, but you'd like to store them in your child's room. From winter quilts to hockey sticks, a Trundle Bed like our Ashley Bookcase Bed provides the perfect storage space.
