If the idea of crafting with your kids makes you cringe, you're not alone! But crafting doesn't have to be messy. Or require a lot of prep work. If that's not your style, don't worry: you can still offer your child the satisfaction that comes with the sensory involvement and joy of creating! We'll start with a few string-based crafts, suitable for both boys and girls.
Knot Practice for Kids
As soon as your child has the fine motor skills to be able to tie a knot, you can teach them to do some pretty amazing crafts! And don't worry: you don't need to know how to knit or crochet yourself. Not only are these crafts simple and virtually mess-free, but you can definitely afford them, even on a shoestring! The best part may be that most of these crafts are functional, rather than for display only. Kids can wear, play with, or use the items that they make, starting with this Knotted Felt Pillow.
Macrame for Kids
Once your child is proficient at knotting, they may be ready to take on Macrame. Macrame requires cotton twine as well as scissors and tape. All you have to do is follow directions to tie knots in a specific pattern to make this Rock Necklace or Hanging Planters. A smaller project that requires a few extra supplies, these Macrame Dolls are perfect for pretend play! You could even name them and use them to act out a favorite story.
Paracord for Kids
Paracord is another string-based craft that kids can do, requiring very little in the way of supplies or preparation. All you need is paracord and any beads or clasps you need for your specific project. While the Paracord Survival Bracelet may be the quintessential paracord project, other ideas range from Keychains to Fidget Spinners and — for more advanced paracord crafters — Paracord Creatures like these dragonflies. Be aware that the typical way to finish a paracord project is by burning the ends, so be sure to carefully instruct and supervise children for that step.
Weaving for Kids
Weaving is an age-old skill that today's kids might not realize is used to create the fabric used to make their clothing. You don't need an expensive or complicated loom to get started, though! Check out this Cardboard Circle Weaving craft which would make a cozy wall hanging in your child's room or a great gift for grandparents! For those who are ready for slightly more advanced yarn crafts, Finger Knitting is a great place to start. Essentially, it's still weaving, only you're using your fingers as your loom and removing them after you're finished. Since finger knitting doesn't require the dexterity needed for crocheting or knitting with needles, it's a great kid-friendly choice.
Our next category of crafts is a variation on the string theme: hand sewing.
