In Part 1, we looked at the four primary colors and the psychology behind them, as well as how different shades of the same color can either visually open or close up a room. Now, we’re going to delve a little further into why you probably choose the colors you do and how you can make the best choices for your individual child’s room.
Choosing Colors According to Your Child
An extension of the psychology of color has to do with individuals and their physical connections to specific colors through color analysis. Some proponents of color-analysis theory actually notice blood reactions to a person’s ideal colors, explaining not only why different people look better in some families of colors than others, but also why we tend to decorate in our preferred color family. What does this have to do with your child’s bedroom? Instead of going with your tried-and-true favorites, why not go with the colors your child prefers? That preference might not be just a favorite color but the colors that make your child feel at his or her best.
Choosing Colors for Multiple Children
If your children share a bedroom, you have a more challenging task. You can ask each child for their top 3 color choices and hope one coincides or let each of them choose a color, and try to find shades that would mesh well together, possibly bringing in a third or fourth color. To find out how designers determine which colors will make harmonious combinations, all you need is a little knowledge of the color wheel. Your kids might enjoy learning about how complementary, analogous, or triad color combinations appeal to the eye, and then they might be willing to choose a color scheme from there.
Choosing Colors That Will Last
We’re not talking about the best brand of paint here, but about colors that transcend fads or favorite characters. The best way to avoid a short-lived color preference is to make sure not to use extremely bold shades of those colors — or a combination that just screams a particular character (think dark purple and bright green for Barney — or red and yellow for Mickey Mouse). While children’s play rooms can certainly benefit from bright, bold colors, it’s best to keep those to accents for bedrooms. After all, you do want to encourage them to actually go to sleep.
