Recent studies have revealed an even more important component in children's academic achievement among the ongoing discussions about educational funding, advantages of private vs. public school, teacher preparation, and professional development: parental support and home life. While school and family involvement are vital for academic performance, the importance of family involvement is stronger, according to a study involving 10,000 adolescents. If you're not sure if your child's school is the best fit, hearing that kind of comment can be both relieving and stressful for you as a parent since you realize how important your role is.
Understanding that you have a significant influence over your child's academic performance, you can discover how to properly guide your kids toward realizing their full potential. But, researching all the ways you may affect your children's educational decisions can occasionally feel overwhelming - almost like drinking from a fire hydrant. So let's start by focusing on how to maintain strong family relationships before moving on to a few other kinds of parental support.
What's Required
Family interactions and relationships are actually among the most important factors in determining a child's academic achievement, despite the fact that they may seem unconnected to academics or even the opposite of them. It is obvious that this crucial component of a family life that promotes academic success is not encouraged during a dinner that is conversation-free and after which a child is sent to his or her room to study. The fundamental elements of what is referred to as "family social capital" in the study mentioned above include positive parent-child interactions that encourage trust and open communication as well as involvement in a child's schooling. This goal demands time, space, and deliberate effort, just like any other relationship goal.
Questions To Think About
Where and when will you consciously seek out this kind of relationship as a parent? Academic achievement is only one of the many areas where family dinner time has been shown to benefit children. It should be a daily ritual that involves everyone sitting down at the table at home at roughly the same time each day. Of course, there will occasionally be exceptions. Can you make the drive home from soccer practice or symphony rehearsal an unplugged time of bonding if dinnertime must be rushed to enable enough time to finish homework and other required tasks? Can you take a break and create a bedtime ritual even if you have to work late and then catch up on your own domestic chores? Consider setting out the last 15 minutes before your kids go to bed to read or look at something you or they found inspiring and significant and have a conversation about it.
The key is to be intentional about growing your connections with each of your children; there is no secret recipe, ideal schedule, or location.
