Like Futons, Day Beds provide multi-functional surfaces that provide a sleep surface by night and seating by day. They can help you maximize the space in your child’s bedroom while providing a hint of history.
The First Day Beds
Did you know that Day Beds actually came before couches or sofas? Also referred to as “klines,” they were once used like we use sofas today, for relaxing and socializing. Dating back to Ancient Greece, the first Day Beds were typically made from stone, which was far more easily sourced along the Mediterranean. To make them comfortable, they were covered in linens and pillows. (Today’s Day Beds are typically made from wood or metal, but many people continue the time-honored tradition of stacking them with pillows-a-plenty.)
The so-called “couch” used in the first Freudian analyses were actually reclining Day Beds, on which patients could fully recline. In fact, Freud wasn’t the only professional to utilize a version of the Day Bed. Many medical professionals used a form of the Cure Chair to accommodate patients as they convalesced. The forerunner of the modern Hospital Bed, this more portable piece had an adjustable back, allowing the patient to recline or sit up. They could even be moved outdoors, providing the first versions of a pool-side, full-seated, chaise lounge.
Modern Day Beds
While the first versions of the Day Bed were designed more for daytime reclining or napping, today’s Day Beds are usually used for that purpose by day as well as for a sleep surface by night. Under-bed trundles are often used as accessories for today’s Day Beds, providing a second Twin-sized mattress which fits under the Day Bed and can be conveniently pulled out to accommodate a second sleeper.
Bedroom Source Day Beds
While The Bedroom Source carries a variety of Day Beds, we’ll just take time to look at three especially unique styles.
The Isabella Bookcase Daybed provides plenty of storage, without sacrificing any style! Its under-bed storage options include either three separate pull-out drawers or a single Trundle.
The Maxtrix ® Daybed can include cushions similar to those found on a sofa, but you could also purchase extra pillows or cushions separately to coordinate with any daybed or bedding motif.
The Bellamy Day Dreamers Day Bed is made of metal but, at first glance, appears to be upholstered. This bed’s curvy shape is reminiscent of the Day Bed’s origins, looking more like a sofa than a bed.
Today’s Day Beds may be different from their predecessors, but they still provide a comfortable place to relax in style.
