Genevieve Collection: Inspiration from a Paris Carousel

Posted on 09/06/2016

The Genevieve Collection holds a playful, feminine appeal inspired by a vintage carousel in Paris, France. The Genevieve Collection offers a classic, vintage feel along with metal pieces and a visual theme of oval rings that appears throughout the collection. Understanding the inspiration behind such design elements can help you better appreciate their appeal.

Inspiration for the Genevieve Collection

Whether you’ve actually been to France or have only dreamed of being whisked away, perhaps taking a boat tour down the Seine River, join me for a brief journey. After enjoying views of the Eiffel Tower and a light lunch at an outdoor café along the Champs-Élysées, you take a walk through the gorgeous Jardin du Luxembourg. Amid the ornate French and English gardens, past grand stone monuments and other impressive displays of grand beauty, you see a green roof and are surprised at what’s under it — a carousel! Unlike some more ornate ones throughout the City of Lights, this one is smaller, weather-beaten, and older than any others.

Dating back to 1879, this carousel was designed by the same architect who drafted the Paris Opera House. Charles Garnier won a design contest initiated by Emporer Napoleon III, leading the way to an architectural masterpiece which would become a prototype for many theaters across the globe. The much-less-noticeable beauty of the carousel he designed has certainly been enjoyed by myriad children in its more than 100-year tenure in the playground.

The carousel offers an added surprise: Children are given wood sticks to use in trying to reach for brass rings when their rides bring them high enough to do so. That jeu de bagues (ring game) idea is echoed in each ring, or oval, and the metal-wood combination is reflected in the various combination pieces in the Genevieve Collection.

Complementary Décor for the Genevieve Collection

Once you choose which furniture pieces (metal, French White, and upholstered options) you want for your daughter’s room, it’ll be time to choose colors and textures to complement those pieces. Since the color scheme of the furniture is neutral, you can really go with just about any accent color or color family; however, note that the hardware and tan upholstery might not coordinate well with other neutrals, such as grays. If you choose a tan, be sure it doesn’t clash with the linen-looking upholstery, and because the metal pieces are such a unique finish that may be hard to match, you might want to make sure any other metals in the room are painted instead of bringing in a competing metallic option. The feminine lines of any Genevieve headboard or mirror would become even more striking against a dark or bright back drop, but if you prefer a more understated look, pastels or muted tones might be a better fit.

A fun décor theme in keeping with the inspiration for Genevieve might be to incorporate carousel elements or prints of Parisian gardens or landmarks. You could also choose to reinforce the ring theme by finding oval-shaped picture frames and other round accessories.
