While the most crucial features of your child's bedroom (think beds and dressers and bookshelves) are probably not what your child will get thrilled about, what will make the kids in your life shriek with delight? Favorites, surprises, and things unique to them.
Providing Common Ground
Even a brilliantly colored kid's room may have a feeling of unity when you're thoughtful about what you include — and don't include — in the visible portions of the room, whether it's a color scheme or design motif. Depending on your child's age and personality, you may want to choose a theme based on his or her interests, or you may want to work with your child to prepare specifics based on an agreed-upon concept. Start with a prized possession, a cherished photograph, or even a favorite blanket. You may tape color swatches or photographs of design ideas on paper and store them in a file or on the fridge as you collect ideas, or make a Pinterest board with your favorites.
Collecting Unique Items
Many award-winning designs have the ability to make visitors feel at ease, as if they are a part of a story that has already begun. The use of found artifacts, each with its own tale, can help achieve this impact. It might be easier to buy a bed-in-a-bag and a themed pre-packaged set of decorations, but it won't be nearly as much fun — or as meaningful to your child. Instead of immediately filling every shelf and every inch of wall space with your new furnishings, create a collection — perhaps of various-shaped jars or vintage books — and add to it when you go on trips or special adventures. Each item will elicit a family memory and prompt a narrative to share with friends.
Personal Creations on Display
It's critical to use easily adjustable design components when decorating a kid-friendly space. The possibilities here are unlimited, from cork boards (which are incorporated into certain desk/vanity designs) to chalkboards or chalkboard-painted walls. Basically, your kids will want to showcase their own artwork, personal notes, and photos; you'll then want to give them a place to do so without hurting your walls or, worse, trashing your furniture with tape or push pins. String with clothespins, spray-painted clip boards, picture frames with clips, and painted metal sheets with magnets are all options for displaying and changing out designs.
Playing with Walls
There are so many different ways to be creative with patterns and colors nowadays. The walls are one place where colors and patterns can make a big difference. Peel-and-stick murals, taped-off chevron designs, and removable wallpaper — for an allover design or to cut out for a designer look — can all be considered.
