You don't have to be a design professional in order to create an inviting space for your child — or even a surprisingly stunning one! Establishing a visual focal point for the room is a key part of the design process, and it's something even an amateur designer (a.k.a. you) can do! It's all about creating visual contrast and drawing a person's eyes toward a specific area of the room or even a singular design element. As we have discussed in a previous post, the space or item that you choose as the focal point will be somewhat determined by your child's unique interests. After you decide on something, you'll want to make sure it stands out against the "canvas" or background. With a few more considerations, you'll be well on your way to creating a visually striking and appealing room that speaks love and welcome to your child.
Focal Point, Illuminated
You don't want to get so concerned about contrast that you forget about how light and color work to draw the eye toward something. An "accent wall" can provide a general area of focus, and the ombre painting technique that's in vogue right now is one way this can be accomplished within a wall or another surface in the room. The gradient of an ombre surface draws your eyes toward the lightest level. You could use it to draw the eye upward, capitalizing on a chandelier as a focal point.
Remember: not only can color and light help point toward an existing focal point; color and light can also establish an area or item as the focal point. For instance, in a mostly dark room, a corner lamp illuminating a comfy chair with a light-colored throw can provide an inviting space for reading as well as serve as a visual focal point.
Focal Point, Interrupted
Especially if your child's bedroom is on the small side, you can easily allow your design scheme to be overpowered by furniture, if you don't select it carefully. Remember, visual focus is all about color, light, and contrast. So if you prefer light-colored walls, know that darker furniture will stand out against them, providing plenty of contrast; however, too much contrast ends up looking cluttered. A white painted headboard against those same light-colored walls may look quite calming, providing a generally light space against which a few select darker elements will certainly stand out. A single dark or bright accent wall could also allow one of those white pieces to demonstrate contrast, allowing it to become the focal point of the room.
Focal Point, Intensified
Following the example above, in which the headboard of the bed becomes the focal point of the room, you could maximize the intensity of the focal point you've already established with an additional touch, helping keep the gaze that's already been drawn to the area. Maybe a similarly striking wallhanging above the headboard could reinforce the design idea. Alternatively, you could choose a few decorative pillows that stand out against otherwise light-colored, plain bedding.
