Perhaps you tend toward minimalist décor ideology, in which your tendency may be to make nothing in the room draw a person's eye toward it: All is plain, streamlined, and flat. On the other hand, maybe you lean toward the opposite extreme — a style-intensive scheme, where every corner of the room screams for your attention. If you have a penchant for either design style extreme, the problem is the same: Your room may lack a focal point.
Focal Point, Presented
By definition, a focal point is "the point at which all elements or aspects converge; the center of activity or attention:" or "the central or principal point of focus." In the world of interior décor, we get a little more specific: "something that will draw people's eyes and impress them with the décor of the room." A focal point also serves to "create a certain mood or theme that will define the emotional impact the room is intended to create." Now, when we're considering a child's bedroom, we're not dealing with a room that will be often visited by guests; instead, the bedroom's main aim is to provide a welcoming retreat and play or work space for your child or teen.
Focal Point, Positioned
To create a visual focal point, consider the background: The item should stand out from it in some way. For example, think of a photograph you'd like to have "doctored" to accentuate something special: The entire picture might be black and white, except for your child's bright orange teddy bear or pale blue blanket. That single colored item would clearly become the focal point of the picture. At the same time, if that identical item were part of a completely colored photograph, it wouldn't quite pack the same punch. Of course, a colored item against a grayscale backdrop isn't the only option: Amid several color photos, a black-and-white photo is bound to stand out. The important part is contrast.
Focal Point, Personalized
Along with so many other aspects of your child's room, the focal point should reflect your child's personality or priorities. It could be a treasured object or picture that inspired the room's theme, or simply an accent piece that reflects that theme or draws attention to the area of the room that's most significant for your child. Envision your child entering the room for the first time or at the end of a difficult day. What would naturally draw the eye and make your child smile? From an artistic rendition of a favorite word to a reminder of a special memory, story, or collection, almost anything can provide inspiration. Does reading put your child in his or her happy place? Then maybe a special reading nook would include a chair or wall art that serves as the room's focal point.
