In addition to our traditional tall bookcases that coordinate with our boys' bedroom collections and girls' bedroom collections, we also offer some non-traditional, combination pieces. We realize that not every child's bedroom has the floor space to devote to an added piece of furniture — and that some kids need more bookshelf space than a single bookshelf offers. Whichever situation describes your child's bookcase needs, we have plenty of outside-the-box ideas for incorporating more shelving into your child's room.
Desks with Built-in Bookshelves
Many of our Bedroom Collections include Desks with Hutches; many of those Desk Hutches have shelves that can accommodate books. Some of our favorites for girls are these:
•
Ashley Desk Hutch
•
Ivy Desk Hutch
For boys, these desk toppers seem especially book-worthy:
•
Bailey Desk Hutch
•
Maxtrix Desk Hutch
•
Seaview Desk Hutch
Hutches aren't the only ways to incorporate bookshelves into desks, though. For instance, consider the unusually innovative design of the Skyline Bookcase Desk, which incorporates a single fixed shelf into the bottom storage area, beneath the work surface of the desk. By simply moving the desk chair and pushing in the keyboard shelf, you can remove the obvious signs of its being a desk, transforming the piece into what looks like a stand-alone short bookshelf. With its Weathered Oak finish, this charming addition to the Skyline Collection makes it one of our favorite sets.
Dressers with Bookshelves
While shelved Desk Hutches are more common than Dresser Hutches, the Bedroom Source does carry a few toppers for Dressers that can dual function as bookshelves.
The Ivy Dresser Hutch is one of those. It measures 53 inches wide by 12 inches deep and adds 44 inches to the height of the Ivy Dresser. In addition to the six storage areas, it includes two drawers. The storage areas are comprised of a single fixed shelf, two removable/adjustable shelves, and two removable dividers. Like other members of the Ivy Collection, the Ivy Dresser Hutch is finished in Antique White Linen and showcases curvy, luxurious shapes.
A second Dresser Hutch is the Isabella Dresser Hutch, which comes in your choice of Distressed Linen and Distressed Gray. It also includes two small drawers as well as a couple smaller open compartments, but the majority of the space on the single shelf is open and without any dividers. The Isabella Hutch measures 51 inches wide by 12 inches deep and adds 44 inches to the height of the Isabella Dresser.
Other combination pieces that can incorporate bookshelves include beds and nightstands. While some Bookcase Beds incorporate bookshelves into the headboard, some Study Lofts or Storage Beds can also include them.
